While the reviews on the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM are certainly not overly impressive, it still carries with it the tough features that has built Canon into one of the most reputable photography equipment leaders. It does feature an incredible range of focal lengths and has an impressive maximum magnification of .28x, but is not limited to long range photography. The Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM also has an MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of 17.7, meaning that close subjects are definitely included in this lenses' capabilities.
However, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM does experience some difficulties in its quest to become a high quality lens. Optically the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM is a disappointing lens, it is certainly not the sharpest Canon lens available. Unfortunately it does feature high levels of distortion that is present on most shots, and is nearly impossible to compensate for. Due to its lower quality optical specifications and its lower speed range, the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM is not one of Canon's most prestigious lenses.
While the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM is fairly traditional in terms of an everyday use lens, it is certainly not one of Canon's finest products. It's tendency for distortion and contrast issues make it one of the lower end lenses Canon has produced.
