Currently the fastest 28mm lens produced by Canon, the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is one of the fastest wide angle lenses available today. It features a rather small size and decent build quality. Its small size is exceptionally convenient, making the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM a wonderful travel lens. At just 10.9 ounces the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is one of the lightest wide angle lenses on the market, and considering its speed that is truly a remarkable statistic. This lens also handles incredibly well for its size yet does feature some trouble in terms of overall specifications and performance levels.

The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM features very obvious chromatic aberration in the corners of the image, however it does a fairly good job at controlling barrel distortion. It also creates a nice background blur, allowing the eye to casually catch hold of the image's subject while not being distracted by unnecessary background objects. However, overall the sharpness of the images that the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM provides are less than stellar, and this lens is also fairly subject to flare which causes a lower quality image.
With a minimum focus distance of 9.8, the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is pretty average. It is not far ahead or behind most other lenses of its size and price, meaning it is a fairly average lens. If the image quality of the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is acceptable to the user it will make a fairly successful low-light handheld lens that can be used daily. It features a convenient size that makes it incredibly user friendly. The only precaution for the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is that its quality is not the greatest, yet with a small lens such as this that is to be expected.
