Finding a positive combination between compact size and acceptable performance is sometimes hard to accomplish, yet the Canon EF 35mm f/2 appears to be one wide angle lens that is up to the task. It is a very small lens that is incredibly light, and surprisingly successful considering its price. It features an acceptable build quality, something that generally suffers in lenses of this size. The EF 35mm f/2 has a small focus ring, yet that is to be expected in this size lens, but it is definitely easier to use than the more common front-mounted focus rings on some of the other small wide angle lenses Canon offers.

One of the disadvantages of the EF 35mm f/2 is its issues in the accuracy department. The EF 35mm f/2 struggles to focus at times, and features a rather shallow depth of field. However, one of the unpredicted advantages that comes along with the low DOF is the slight background blur that results, giving the user an image that features a sharp subject and a background that doesn't take away from the subject.

The color that the Canon EF 35mm f/2 offers is quite successful, yet it does seem to struggle with contrast. It has a very slight washed out appearance, which requires slight manual adjustment of the contrast. While this is indeed a minor annoyance, it is certainly visible to any photographer with average experience. The strongest point of the Canon EF 35mm f/2 is its center sharpness. This lens is able to accurately capture a subject and give it an incredibly sharp appearance. Unfortunately as the eyes travel to the outer edges of the image the quality drops considerably.
Overall, considering the size and convenience that the Canon EF 35mm f/2 offers with its specifications and performance level, this is a wonderful small lens that will meet the expectations of most users.
